DEVOTION TO THE ROSARY IN MALTA

During the second world war, while Malta was being heavily bombed, the Maltese people, led by the clergy, took refuge in shelters and prayed the Rosary there.  It is to the fervent respect for the Rosary that the Maltese attribute the entry through the Grand Harbour on the feast of Mary's Assumption on August 15, 1941, of one ship full of provisions, which saved the islanders from starvation.

BACKGROUND TO THE LUMINOUS MYSTERIES

The Founder, George Preca,  treasured the praying of the Rosary.  In order to encourage everyone to pray the Rosary, he often said: "Our Lady waits for our Rosary even up till midnight!"  For him, the Rosary was to be meditative and reflective. This can be seen clearly in his writing called 'The Mysteries of Light'.  The Mysteries of Light were proposed by our Founder in 1957 to be meditated privately by the SDC Members.

JOHN PAUL II AND THE MYSTERIES OF LIGHT

In a new apostolic letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae (The Rosary of the Virgin Mary), His Holiness says that 'the Rosary is a powerful prayer for peace, for families and for contemplating the mysteries of Christ's life'.  He devised these five new mysteries similar to the ones developed by George Preca in 1957.

PRAYING THE MYSTERIES OF LIGHT

The Mysteries of Light to be reflected on Thursdays focus on the Public Life of Jesus.

The Members of the SDC pray an introduction to each decade when contemplating the Mysteries of the Rosary.  These prayers are provided as an introduction to the Mysteries of Light:
