"May he support us all the day long 'till the shades lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over and our work is done, then in his mercy may he give us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last!"
Cardinal John Henry Newman

JOSEPH ZAMMIT was the first born son of four brothers and two sisters, and lived at Birzebbuga, Malta. He was incorporated into the SDC in December 1950 in Malta – the ceremony conducted by the first Superior General, Eugenio Borg.

Joseph emigrated to Australia in 1961 to assist with the work of the SDC. He was appointed Superior of the Paddington centre in 1963. In 1969, this centre was transferred to Carss Park.

In Australia he worked at the Garden Island Navy Dockyard in Sydney as a shipwright and was an exemplary employee.

Over the years, Joseph built up a substantial audio-visual library to assist in the work of the SDC. He was instrumental in founding other SDC outreaches, including Brighton-le-Sands and Rooty Hill. A generous man, he gave all that he had for the work of the SDC.

During Joseph’s time in Australia, he faced the usual difficulties but dealt with each one in a professional manner. He had a vision of growth for the SDC in this country. He continued with the idealism and spirit of George Preca throughout his time here and very much aware of the Australian setting and culture. Joseph has been outstanding in his loyalty. He is an example to all of what a vocation is.

Joseph retired to Malta in 2005, where he enjoyed the peace and comfort of the SDC run Good Samaritan Centre for SDC Members. He was not able to fully benefit from this comfort, as illness struck him and he died on 8 February 2008.
